Parish Church of
San Fernando Rey
Located in the centre of Santiago del Teide, this church is the main religious building in the municipality and one of its historical landmarks. Following a request from local residents and the intervention of Don Fernando del Hoyo Solórzano y Alzola, lord of the Manor of Santiago, King Felipe IV created the parish by royal decree on 10 May 1678.
On 9 September 1679, the founding document was signed, and a few months later, on 30 December, the first parish mass was celebrated. Since then, the temple has been a spiritual and social centre for the community, around which much of the life of the municipality has developed.
Inside, the half-orange dome that crowns the main chapel stands out, an unusual architectural solution in the island’s rural churches, which gives the complex a unique character. It also houses an image of Saint James the Apostle, a central figure in local devotion, in a space that combines history and tradition.
As part of the Holy Year of St James in 2022, the temple opened its Holy Door for the first time, becoming the first church in Tenerife to feature this jubilee symbol. The opening, authorised by papal bull, remained in place until February 2024 and was an extraordinary event in the history of the municipality.
Your visit will allow you to discover a building steeped in history, in a setting that combines traditional architecture and local life.
How to get there?
The temple is located in the heart of Santiago del Teide, next to the main square and opposite the City Hall. It is located in an accessible area and has parking spaces nearby.
As this is a place of heritage and spiritual value, it is important to visit it with respect, avoiding interfering with religious celebrations.
