Hermitage of
Santiago Apóstol
Considered the first religious building in the municipality, the Hermitage of Santiago Apóstol is already documented in 1541. Inside, the primitive image of Saint James the Apostle was venerated, giving the municipality its name.
A storm knocked it down in 1713, and it was not until 1955 that the current building was erected on its ruins. Also known as ‘the old church’, this is where the traditional commemoration of the miracle of the Santísimo del Volcán (Holy Sacrament of the Volcano) is held every year, one of the most representative religious events linked to the eruption of the Chinyero Volcano in 1909.
Surrounded by rural and volcanic landscapes, a visit here offers a glimpse into the historical and spiritual origins of the municipality, in a corner that has preserved its simplicity and symbolism intact.
How to get there?
The chapel is located in the centre of Valle de Arriba, just a few minutes’ drive from the town centre of Santiago del Teide. It can be accessed via the TF-82 road, and it is possible to walk around the surrounding area to appreciate both the agricultural landscape and the traditional character of the place.
As this is a place of heritage and spiritual value, it is important to visit it with respect, avoiding disturbing the environment or interfering with religious or community activities.
